Review of Setting Remuneration and Allowances for Local Government Elected Members

The Remuneration Authority (the Authority) is required to issue a new determination covering local government elected members remuneration and allowances which takes effect from 1st July 2017.

In considering how we should approach this, we have concluded that there is an opportunity for both short term improvements to the system for immediate implementation as well as some deeper changes which we propose to introduce in 2019.

The following consultation document, which has been sent to all councils for their feedback, discusses our proposals. It contains three parts:

  • Part One – Is a general introduction and it outlines the Authority’s legal requirements for setting local government elected members remuneration.
  • Part Two – Proposes immediate changes (2017 Determination) that will be effective from 1 July 2017: we would appreciate receiving feedback from councils on this part, to info@remauthority.govt.nz, by 5pm Monday 19th June 2017.
  • Part Three – Discusses the longer term proposals which are planned to be introduced in 2019: we would appreciate feedback from councils on part three, to info@remauthority.govt.nz, by Friday December 15th 2017.
