Remuneration for mayors and regional chairs is set directly by the Remuneration Authority and is not included in the council governance remuneration pool.
All mayor and regional council chair positions are remunerated as full time, with the exception of the Mayor of the Chatham Islands.
Remuneration for a mayor or regional council chair will be based on the placement of their council on one of the three size indices, plus the relationship that the Authority has established between local government and parliamentary remuneration.
Pay for local government members
Mayors and regional council chairs (apart from the Mayor of the Chatham Islands) are not able to claim travel time allowance, and no additional remuneration can be provided to them, with the exception of fees for resource consent hearings in exceptional circumstances.
Mayors and regional council chairs who choose to have a council-provided car will have their remuneration adjusted by their council, using the formula provided by the Authority.
