The Remuneration Authority (the Authority) has begun its review of the Members of Parliament (MPs) salaries and allowances as required under section 19(6) of the Remuneration Authority Act 1977.
After the review, the Authority must issue a determination that:

The Authority resolved to begin the review of MPs salaries and allowances on Friday 17 November 2023 and the terms of reference for this review were approved by the Authority on 12 February 2024.

The Authority was made aware the University of Canterbury has a Master of Data Science programme and could sponsor an experienced student with suitable qualifications to undertake research for the Authority. The research undertaken by this student was to inform the Authority of the appropriate confidence levels applicable to forecasted movements of consumer inflation, wage inflation, and other economic indicators. This student's final report for the Authority substantially agreed with the forecasters’ own advice to treat their figures with caution, especially the longer-range forecasts.
